Institute of Chemical Engineers launches stinging attack on government's scrapping of CCS funding

The Institution of Chemical Engineer's (IChemE) Energy Centre has launched a blistering attack on the government's long-term energy strategy in the wake of its decision last autumn to scrap a £1bn carbon capture and storage (CCS) competition.

IChemE last week said the move calls into question the UK government's ability to meet the long-term climate change targets agreed at the Paris summit, as it leaves the UK with no pipeline of projects for mitigating the carbon emitted from its planned new fleet of gas-fired power plants.

Vice-chair of the Energy Centre Board Professor Geoff Maitland said the cancellation of CCS funding led to the abandonment of two projects that were vital to the UK meeting its CO2 mitigation targets.
